LANTTU – SWEDE OR RUTABAGA

The swede has many names rutabaga, Swedish turnip or neep (in Finnish lanttu) being the most known ones. It is a root vegetable that originated as a cross between the cabbage and the turnip.

In Finland it is prepared in multiple ways: roasted as garnish, baked in casseroles, boiled in a variety of different kids of soups, grated or eaten even uncooked.  Most popular one is the swede casserole which is served during Christmas and all around the year as part of a celebration feast in Häme (in the Middle of the country).
